CPA Alberta Tax Clinic Program

2025 CPA Alberta Tax Clinic at the Scenic Acres Community Association or the Bowness Seniors’ Centre 

This tax preparation is in respect of income activity for the year 2024. Between March 5 and April 20, 2025, you could have a member of the Certified Professional Accountants Association of Alberta (CPAA) prepare your 2024 tax filing for free at a local community facility in Bowness or Scenic Acres. 

 

Are You Eligible to Have a Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) Complete Your 2024 Tax Filing for FREE? 

You are eligible for this free tax prep clinic if you meet the following criteria: 

– Income threshold – the sum of all income including employment, investments, interest, pensions/annuity/old age security/RRSPs, RESP, TSFA, taxable benefits, employment insurance (unemployment benefits), dividends, etc. (This income is substantiated through official tax information and receipts). 

– Suitable for many students, seniors and lower income households.

You are ineligible if: 

– Your total family income exceeds the values in the table above 

– You have self-employment income, rental income or real estate holdings 

– Your spouse does not live in Canada 

– The client for whom the tax prep is being done has died in 2024 (if the client has died in 2025, a 2024 return can be done). 

 

What is Family Income s Defined Under the Canadian Income Tax Act?

Family refers to single parents (including separated, divorced and widowed parents), and married or common-law couples with or without eligible dependants. 

 

Which location should you go to?

– If you are member of the Bowness Seniors’ Centre, or a senior in Bowness, you can attend at the Bowness Seniors’ Centre, 6422 35th Ave NW. (Phone number is 403-286-4488) 

– If you are a resident of Scenic Acres or surrounding communities, you can attend at the Scenic Acres Community Centre, 8825 Scurfield Dr NW (Phone number s 403-547-9589) 

 

How many people can get their taxes done for FREE? 

We estimated that there could be about 25 at the Bowness location and about 40 at the Scenic Acres location. As such, spots are limited, so don’t delay! 

 

Service Fees – There aren’t any! This Service is Totally Cost FREE 

This service is entirely FREE. There is no cost to meet with the CPA, and there is no cost to work with the Bowness Seniors’ Centre or the Scenic Acres Community Association. 

 

There Are Two Ways to Have a CPA Help You Complete Your 2024 Tax Return 

Virtual/Document appointments 

Virtual appointments means that you aren’t meeting with a CPA to complete the taxes, but a representative of BSC or SACA to help you complete forms, scan the completed forms and other tax forms to the portal, and a CPA will complete the tax return (if all the documents are present and complete) within 5 business days. If completed, the completed tax filing will be posted to the portal, and individuals will be called back in to pick-up a printed copy of the 2024 tax filing. 

Virtual – call the office to arrange meeting to receive and scan documents. Day, evening and weekend appointments may be available 

– Bowness Seniors’ Centre – 403-286-4488, office open to book appointments 9AM to 3PM Monday to Friday 

– Scenic Acres Community Association – 403-547-9589, office open to book appointments, M/W/F 9AM to 1PM, T/TH 9AM to 3PM 

 

In-person 

These appointments on on-site. At your appointed time, you will meet with a BSC or SACA representative to help complete some forms and check that you have your documents. Next, you’ll meet with a CPA in person, who will review with you and complete your tax filing.

What Do Individuals Bring With Them: 

– Your 2023 Tax Notice/Tax Assessment 

– Your SIN (Social Insurance Number) card 

– Government issued picture identification (Drivers’ License, Passport, for example) 

All official documents regarding income, such as: 

1) T2202A (Statement of Tuition fees paid) 

2) T4 (Statement of renumeration paid, employment income) 

3) T4A (Statement of pension, retirement, annuity, old age security, RESP, or CPP benefits, for example) 

4) T4A (Statement of any personal grants, bursaries, or scholarships received) 

5) T4E (Statement of employment insurance benefits,

6) T4RSP (Statement of RRSP income) 

7) T5007 (Statement of Benefits) 

8) T5 (Interest in Investment Income) 

9) Any charitable receipts 

10) Any health related receipts (although the threshold for health related tax credits is pretty high (in 2023 it was the lesser of $2795 or 3% of your income), if you have a reasonably large sum you should bring them just in case)
