The Scenic Acres Community Association (SACA) organized a meeting between the City of Calgary and residents concerned with the declining state of public green spaces. Considered a LEAF (Landscape Enhancement and Appreciation Fund) program to finance better care for public green spaces in Scenic Acres.
An on-line survey of Scenic Acres residents had 339 responses:
· 72% felt current public green space maintenance was inadequate.
· 78% believed the current appearance of our public green spaces had negative consequences.
· 83% thought our boulevard areas, and 77% thought community entrances, needed immediate improvement.
· 82% were willing to pay to improve the maintenance of our community’s public green spaces.
March 2012
An information session at the SACA AGM and two open houses had support for pursuing a Scenic Acres LEAF program.
May 2012
100 resident volunteers went door to door to collect resident signatures for a petition to establish a LEAF program through an annual Special Tax Levy and received 69% support.
March 2013
Petition and Special Tax Bylaw passed by the City and City Council.
June 2013
LEAF Committee began planning enhanced landscaping in Scenic Acres. Grass cutting and other maintenance remained with the City of Calgary Parks department.
April 2017
The City of Calgary downloads responsibility of grass cutting and maintenance and the annual Operating Grant from the City of Calgary Parks department to LEAF Committee.
March 2023
A LEAF Program Manager hired into an independent contractor position to oversee day-to-day operations of LEAF from April to October
