Silver Springs Outdoor Pool

This spring, the much anticipated redevelopment of the Silver Springs Outdoor Pool will get underway.  Over the fall and winter, the Silver Springs Community Association has been working with The City of Calgary and the Silver Springs Outdoor Pool Fundraising Foundation to fine tune the design of the new facility, which received overwhelming support from the Community at an Open House in April 2015.  The design features:

  • A single basin 33 metres in length and 12.5 metres in width with a deep end for diving
  • Depth in the shallow end of 0.965 metres and 4.15 metres in the deep end
  • A 1 metre springboard accessible by stairs
  • A 3 metre platform accessible by stairs
  • Safety walls around stairs
  • 5 lanes for length swimming
  • Lights in the deep end
  • Fully upgraded mechanical components
  • Designated location for a possible future slide

Renderings of the design, which appear HERE (image 1) and HERE (image 2) are available for viewing in larger format at the Silver Springs Community Association office.

This design was developed to meet the community’s desire to maintain a deep water component in the facility for future generations.  The Silver Springs Outdoor Pool has been a focal point for community life in Silver Springs since 1974, and a significant reason for its continued success is the dive tank.  Youth in particular consistently confirm that it is the diving boards which draw them back to the pool year after year.  Deep water programming is also an effective and fun way for adults and seniors to increase physical activity, which will become more relevant as the population in Calgary ages.  Deep water is also required for swim lessons for people of all ages, which will continue to be offered once the facility reopens.

The budget does not include upgrades to shower and washroom amenities. If there is sufficient support from the community, the SSOPF may continue to fundraise for improvements outside The City’s scope for this project.

To maximize Calgary’s short building season, construction is tentatively scheduled to commence on May 2, 2016, with all work anticipated to be completed in time for the 2017 summer season.  This schedule is tentative, due to the unpredictable nature of Calgary’s weather.

The Pool will remain closed though the summer of 2016 during construction.  The City and the SSCA recognize the impact that a season long closure of the facility will have on the community, but as the pool is outside of its expected lifecycle, the project is necessary to ensure that the pool remains accessible, reliable and safe for future generations.   We ask that you be patient as The City works toward completion in a timely and cost effective manner.

The City of Calgary’s contractors adhere to City of Calgary’s Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004 for hours of operation, material storage and construction best practices, including dust mitigation. If you have questions, please contact The City of Calgary at 311.
