August 28, 2017: Fire Incident Update – As many of you are aware two homes on Scurfield Drive were destroyed on Sunday morning August 27. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this tragic situation. A third house experienced minor damage. We have been advised that both families have their own family support networks assisting them. The families are working with their insurance providers with respect to temporary living requirements and have been offered a wide variety of support services from the City. As of early this morning Monday August 28, the Fire Department assessed the properties and concluded the fire is completely extinguished. There will now be security around the structures for a short period of time. Fire department personnel will take the opportunity to go door-to-door within the immediate vicinity and provide some education and a fire preventative brochure to these residents. Only 1.2% of fires in the City result in total destruction and though these are comforting statistics we know our Scurfield neighbours at these two properties are experiencing loss and inconvenience. More detailed information regarding the circumstances of the fire and family dynamics cannot be shared for privacy reasons. SACA is reaching out to Fire Services to understand any specific needs the family may require. Once we know these requirements, we will communicate them to you and provide our community centre as a focal location to drop off needed items. Thank you to those who have reached out to us and offered to tangibly provide for the families’ needs.
